This is Oscar which I began as a live portrait (see 'Live Portraits' section) and got working really well but then he had to fly back home and I finished it using a photograph and unfortunately, in this case, covered up all the lovely impressionistic brushwork of the sketch to produce something a little stilted and tight
I have a quote somewhere from The Six principles of Chinese painting established by Xie He - check it out with Wickopedia . His first principle refers to
"Spirit Resonance," or vitality, and seems to translate to the nervous energy transmitted from the artist into the work. The overall energy of a work of art. He said that without Spirit Resonance, there was no need to look further. Hmm
I do love his hair though and his shirt is definatley the biz!
